If your house is like mine...the kitchen is the most used & abused room in the house. If I want someone to see or find something...I put it in the kitchen.
So, with that being said, I have been writing a 'verse of the week' on the chalkboard in our kitchen. I never pointed it out to anyone...I just did it. My intentions were that my family would see the words and find encouragement, peace and love that abounds from the scripture.
This week, however, after having heard enough bickering between the girls...I found myself praying that I could come up with some clever way to get my girls to work together. This verse instantly came to mind & I felt God nudging me to be direct with it. So, I had a "meeting" with my children, pointed out the verse and discussed it with them. Simple. I then asked them if they noticed anything else I had written on the board over the last few weeks, and before they even realized it, they began reciting the verses that had been posted. They were memorizing scripture and didn't even realize it. For a moment, I was one proud momma.
Now that I am raising my children in the very same house I grew up in, I find myself repeating similar things that my own parents did. I am so thankful that I was raised in a christian home, with parents who loved Jesus! I was not forced into my faith, but yet given the tools to make the decisions on my own. I remember my mom's bible always laid open on the kitchen counter, with christian radio playing in the background. Dinner conversations often were centered around the Sunday church sermon. As a parent, I now find myself doing the same things. Our verse of the week is just one more way to "Be Jesus" to my children.
If your family is like mine, you're busy...constantly! Family devotions are casual, if they happen at all. So, what do you do to encourage a growing faith in your children?!
