I learned a new farming term today..."Poled". Simply put, it is a cow that has been genetically altered to NOT have horns.
Over the course of the last year or so, probably more, we have been in the process of setting up our little farm for raising Longhorns cows. Finally, about a month or so ago, we were able to make it happen and Dustin brought 3 home. We have 2 females, Daffodil and Summer, and a bull which we named Texas Pete (#379). Anyway, on April Fools' Day, Dustin went out to check on and feed the animals as he usually does & found that Daffodil (who we knew was pregnant) had her calf. We knew she was expecting, but didn't think it would happen til the end of the month...but here she was, early!!
The April Fool's joke...the calf is "poled". So, yes...we are now the proud owners of a "Hornless Longhorn Calf".
